"Eleven and Change"

One foggy morning we received a request to respond up to the Grizzly Peak area to assist Animal Control. We were told that a horse was stuck in a gate.

When we arrived, we found "Eleven and Change," an ex-racing thoroughbred, stuck over the top of a gate, her hind feet not quite touching the ground.

Eleven and Change tried to jump the gate and came up short

The horse didn't seem to be seriously hurt, but she was acting a little weak. Not knowing how long she had been hung up this way, we opted to get her off the gate as quickly as possible. The gate could not be unbolted, so we set up to cut the hinges with a torch.

Setting up to remove the gate hinges

We placed a jacket over her head so the torch wouldn't frighten her and cut the hinges. Before we dropped the gate, a vet arrived and gave her a mild sedative so she would be less likely to suddenly react when we lowered the gate. We dropped the gate and she stepped free without further incident, and after a brief exam, she was led back to her paddock where she set about eating her morning hay.
