While some people dawdled and got caught short, others planned ahead and removed their livestock early in the emergency to other ranches on high ground or facilities such as fairgrounds who were receiving "refugee" livestock. The KBR crew and most of its boarders, along with neighbors who had trailers, successfully evacuated 21 horses from the "Sand Mound" area of Bethel Island in about 30 minutes when a "boil" in the levee there threatened their safety.
