"Dan"

Dan as a 1300 Lb. 2-year old

We first saw Dan as a youngster in a pasture full of saddle horses at Pat Parelli's ranch in Clements, CA. Pat had bought him at a yearling sale and had intended to teach him to work to voice commands, but with his clinic schedule expanding, he never found the time. We liked Dan and joked that he would make a great companion for Havilynn, our Clyde cross mare.

Not too long after, Pat mentioned that he might want to sell Dan and inquired as to whether we were seriously interested. We indicated we were, struck a deal, and brought our "baby tractor" home.

We soon discovered that Dan needed a special home. He wasn't mean, but if he saw something outside his lounge shed that he wanted, he'd simply lean against a fence, gate, or window frame and push whatever it was over. We soon realized that heavier construction (e.g., timbers and telephone poles) was in order.

We started him as an oversized saddle horse, later breaking him to harness on a sled and light farm implements, eventually using him as a member of our driving team.

While this work is obviously done more efficiently using a tractor, Dan's presence generated more public interest in the safety message. Move over, "Sparky the Fire Dog", a Belgian's coming through!
