Danny Love's Farrier's Corner

Correct Horseshoeing
Part One

The horse in this feature is Champagne, an Arabian mare who was fully rehabilitated (in 1995) from a leg fracture. We have photographed Danny through the process of a routine shoeing and have broken it down step-by-step.

Danny first inspects the feet.

Danny is looking for unusual wear of the shoe, and for uneven growth between the hoof and the shoe. This left front looks fine, with even wear showing along the face of the shoe.

The right front, however, shows some growth extending outside the medial edge of the shoe. This growth is due to uneven "loading" of the foot... probably as a result of the fracture. It isn't serious, but should be considered when "balancing" the foot. The shoe shows even wear.
