"Colt Starting"

I don't get to do much training, but in what little spare time I do have, my other passion is starting young horses.

Rita, who belongs to one of our boarders, was foaled at our barn in 1994. I had the pleasure of starting this bright young appy, who is now in use as a pleasure / trail horse.

We naturally avoid high impact work on any young horse until it is physically more mature. However there is much that can be done with respect to gentling, accepting the bit, bending, getting used to a rider's weight, encountering basic obstacles, etc.

Of course I enjoyed working with the larger ones too. This Belgian Draft Horse didn't like to canter... until we put him on some cattle!
