We figured we needed a really heads up and gentle shoer to
handle Digger for the first time, so Patty arranged for
Roger Hubbard of Brentwood to work with him. Roger will
allow enough time to teach a nervous animal and work through
the rough spots rather than manhandle his way through the
process.
They decided that they would do the front feet and work with
picking up Digger's hinds. If he was too nervous, he could
actually trim Digger's hind feet another day.
Roger was patient, Patty assisted and the process actually went
pretty smoothly. Having a skilled shoer who knows how to
work with animals who are just starting the gentling process
not only makes the first trim a much less dangerous and
stressful event, but helps teach the animal to accept the
trimming process and be less guarded and resistive the next
time around.
