"Blackjack Junkie" (AKA Blackjack)

Tiffany and Blackjack (on left)
at Equifest, 1998

Blackjack was captured near the town of Goldfield, Nevada, and was adopted by Tiffany in 1994. At the adoption, Tiffany watched him for a long time. Just before they called her number, he came over to the fence. She was able to feed him some hay and scratch him, which he absolutely loved.

Luckily when Tiffany's number was called Blackjack was still available. Tiffany went back to the pen after adopting him, and almost immediately he came over to the fence where she was standing. He then turned and backed into the fence so Tiffany could scratch his butt. Tiffany said, "It was great - I knew I had picked right."

Blackjack has a lot of character. He's just plain silly, at least to Tiffany. He will open and close gates as long as you unlock them for him. He's kind of a Houdini. You have to be sure to lock all gates or he will go visiting the neighbors.

Blackjack had to be taken out of a pen he shared with cows because he liked to run them around too much. He love to play with objects such as hoses, boxes, whips. He loves water. He cannot eat out of a bucket normally - he has to throw the bucket around every mouthful he takes. He knows what "NO" means, kind of like a dog, and comes when called (well, most of the time).

Tiffany has used natural horsemanship techniques with trainer Richard Winters and his apprentice Brandon Domingos. As of this posting (spring, 1998) Blackjack has been started under saddle about 1 year. Tiffany hadn't been able to ride him very much the previous winter due to the weather. After a considerable layoff she finally did start riding him again and she states, "He was just perfect, and I rode in just a halter and lead rope."

Tiffany reports, "All in all, I can't say enough about my mustang. He's been the most fun and entertaining horse that I've ever had."
