"Anita's Western Bridgett" (Bridgett)

Bridgett was a dream come true for Anita. She owned horses when she was first married and then due to finances she had to sell them all. Always wanting a Mustang, she was able to get one when all her kids had grown up and in college. It was quite the day after an adoption in Des Moines, IA, when Bridgett came to her new home along with Zephyr, another Mustang. Bridgett looked rough a little thin and losing her winter coat. By the end of the second day at her new home she was warming up to her new owner and eating bunches of hay out of their hands.

Iowa can get very cold, but Bridgett did well her first winter there. By the time winter had hit full force, she had made great friends with a tom cat that roamed the barn named "Yeller". Bridgett even went as far as to share her grain with Yeller. He liked it because it was sweeter than his regular food.

Bridgett would take her lips and run them up and down Yeller's back. He loved that. He would purr and purr and rub against her. If any other farm cat came in Bridgett's stall she would stand between Yeller and those cats and chase them away. They were the best of friends. Bridgett shared her water and every thing with Yeller.

One week that winter was particularly cold and one morning when Anita and her Husband Gordy walked in to feed Bridgett, she was laying all curled up in her straw bedding to keep warm. They could not believe their eyes, for laying next to her and sound asleep was Yeller. He was nice and warm and so was she. (Unfortunately they had no camera with them to take a picture, but that image is preserved forever in their memory.) The horse and cat became such good friends Bridgett would even let Yeller crawl on her back. Everyone was amazed how Bridgett would walk very slow and almost tiptoed inside her stall to be sure to never step on Yeller.

Their friendship lasted more than a year, then Bridgett went to college to learn more things and to help a student learn about horses. Of course she made friends with another cat. (We don't know his name.) They were not as close as Bridgett and Yeller but almost. Regretfully she had to leave both cats behind.

In January of 1997 Anita and Gordy had Bridgett moved down with them in New Mexico where Bridgett now lives in a stable. There are no cats around to make friends with, but now she has buddied up with a German Shepherd. She is just a friendly gal. Maybe when her owners and move back to Iowa with her in a few months she can find a new cat friend!
