Laura spent the first 2 nights of Scarletts life sleeping in the barn with her.
Laura had no idea when Scarlett would arrive because her mother had been
bred in the wild. Holly never did get very big and on a sub-freezing evening
had Scarlett in the mud. Laura's husband Rick picked up Scarlett and carried
her to the barn. They put a heat lamp on, put some straw down and then Laura
tied 2 of Ricks flannel shirts on Scarlett. The shirts were dubbed "filly
jombos".
After nursing, when Scarlett would lie down again, Laura would get up
from the cot she was sleeping on and cover her new baby with a winter blanket.
"I know this is when the bond was formed between Scarlett and me," Laura
says.
"What made her birth even sweeter was that my mare Star, who I had been
together with for 23 years, had passed away less then a month earlier. I
really believe Scarlett is my gift from Star. She is a very special
filly, just as my beloved Star was."
As you can see from the photo on the right, taken when Scarlett was only 2,
she and Laura have a very unique friendship filled with love and trust.
Laura plans on eventually doing bridleless/saddleless exhibitions with her...
with Scarlett's permission of course!
