Mustang Close-Up

Silver Chico ("Silver")

Silver's mother was captured at the age of 12 and although Silver was only half "mustang", his story is unique and deserving to be included in the gallery. (Silver's sire was a palomino Quarter Horse.)

Silver possessed a number of unique traits. One was his coloring, known as "perlino". He appeared to be albino, however on closer inspection one could see he actually had light cream colored pinto markings with a pure white sock, dapples and a white diamond on his forehead.

Silver and his BLM buddy, Chief

Terry writes, "We did a lot of trail riding with Silver and he could go all day without tiring. I climbed Mt. Diablo in the Bay Area twice with him. I have ridden him all over the Sierra-Nevada foothills where we live northeast of Marysville (CA). He was the best trail horse I ever had! More like a mountain goat--he could go places other horses would spook at and refuse to go. He trusted me and whatever I asked he did."

Silver was a great babysitter for the kids. Never worried about kids taking him off on a ride. He always brought them back safe and sound. He was extremely patient with babies and little kids--wouldn't go out of a walk no matter how hard they tried to get him to go faster. He knew what the kids could take and adjusted accordingly. Older kids, he would trot or slow lope. He just knew what they could do and still hang on.

Terry adds, "He loved kids and they could hang all over him, ride him double, run under his stomach, didn't matter because he would never hurt them. I never worried about our son when he was a baby being around him. He was just one of those once in a lifetime horses. I have owned all different breeds, but none have matched him. He was the first horse I ever owned and he is my last. My son has his horse so we still have a horse around the place, but I could never replace Silver."
