"Starfyre"

Donna & Starfyre and their
"15 Minutes of Fame"
October, 1998
We had seen Starfyre at an earlier adoption in Vallejo and we were surprised that nobody took her, although participation was light that day. In fact one of our stable boarders had considered adopting her and probably would have had she just not agreed to "foster parent" an additional horse for 2 years. We were glad to see her reappear as one of the yearlings that we would work with at Wild Horse Workshop '98.

Donna Van Schaik, who came by to see the horses, immediately got attatched to Starfyre. She didn't have a facility and this would be her first horse, but she convinced us that she was serious about taking her on, was going to stay the week at the workshop to learn how to handle her and help gentle her, so we convinced the BLM that we would help her find a suitable stable for the horse by the time the workshop ended.

Donna is one of those people who will prove that focus, determination and a willingness to learn can sometimes get you farther than past experience. She was out there every day working with Starfyre and learning as well as watching the other horses being gentled and trained. As a result, she and Starfyre have progressed farther than quite a number of more experienced horse owners who adopted and immediately took their horses home.

Donna and Starfyre are doing well. The winter rains and Starfyre's young age have pretty much idled down her training, but she is well adjusted and as she matures, should develop into a good riding horse. When the weather gets better, Donna will start teaching Starfyre how to tolerate new and scary things, developing the basic calmness needed for a horse who will likely carry kids and go out on trail.
