  Street Light Street Views -
Old Time Survivors

Part Three

(This is Part Three of a Street View tour of vintage and historical street and pedestrian lights for enthusiasts to view and in hopes of encouraging cities and towns to preserve some of these old luminaires and electroliers, or at least choose replicas that reflect the character of historic districts when modernizing their lighting. The images link to Google Street Views to make it easy to "look around" if an image interests you. The photos begin in Part One.)

  San Francisco, CA

San Francisco actually owns some 25,000 street lights in the city, powered by the city's Hetch Hetchy hydroelectric plant. (The remainder of the street lights are owned by PG&E.) The city has converted pretty much all of their cobrahead lamps to LEDs, while some of the historic and older series circuits are still in service. However there is a push to eventually replace those lamps or modify the internal lighting packages for energy efficiency.
