KBR Wild Horse and Burro Information Sheet

  WILD HORSES IN THE
SHELDON NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
Denio, Nevada

Summer, 2004
(Information and images courtesy of the US Fish and Wildlife Service, © D.E. Kirkland, photographer.)

These photos are representative of the quality of horses found in the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge and the herds from which the 2004 excess population gathers will take place.

The gathered horses will be placed with adopters through approved non-profit horse groups. The groups will be responsible for proper supervision of the adoptions. The groups can set and keep reasonable adoption fees to cover their expenses. FWS can also place horses directly with adopting individuals.

It is expected that some Sheldon horses will be made available at the Western States Wild Horse & Burro Expo in Reno, NV, August 20 - 22, 2004. (This will be subject to available inventory at the time of the Expo.)

For additional information about these magnificent horses, locating an approved adoption group or qualifying to be an approved adoption group, please contact Marla Bennett at Marla_Bennett@r1.fws.gov.
