KBR Training Information Sheet:

Practicing for Xenophon

Equine facilitated therapy horses have a number of things that they have to tolerate from wheelchair ramps to children moving all over them, to even having rings placed over their ears as part of a rider's stretching exercises.

Patience went to Xenophon on May 16th and is currently being schooled to be a theraputic riding horse. The Xenophon staff love her and say she's one of the smartest horses they've ever had. It's very unusual for such a young horse to be used for theraputic riding.

"Ear ring" (we had to use a dog toy)
Fluttering plastic feed sack over her face
Getting used to people "up high"
"Bear hug"
Pressure on the rump
"Laid back"
Flat on her back
The end product
While most theraputic riding horses spend a year under fully able riders simulating theraputic riding activities, Patience not only packed the disabled riders in her first year, but they demonstrated vaulting at Cal Expo at the California State Fair that summer.
