Case Study: Abscesses
Part One

Willis and Sharon Lamm, of the Kickin' Back Ranch called me out one evening to come and look at a sore footed Quarter horse gelding that they had brought over from a neighbor's pasture. On arrival I noticed that the horse didn't want to put any weight on his left hind foot and I inspected the foot.

After finding where the pain was coming from with a pair of hoof testers, I carved away at the sole of the Hoof where the testers revealed the most pain.

Opening up the sore area
Finding a discharge of gas, serum and pus, I made a large enough opening in the abscess to establish drainage.
Cleaning up the sole with betadine
I then pcked the foot in Ichthamnol, then wrapped it with cotton gauze and a duct tape boot.
Packing the sole prior to wrapping with tape
He stood with this on for about three days, then I reexamined the foot and decided to put a treatment plate on him. This was made for added protection and easy service to the foot. We packed the foot with sugardine and cotton. He wore this for the duration of the shoeing, periodically checking and changing the packing. Eventually the horse healed up fine. This treatment plate was fashioned from metal salvaged from an old bathtub. It is easy to work with, durable and won't rust.
