Case Study: Abscesses
Part Two

Abscesses can have many causes but many are easy to prevent. Poor hoof maintenance including formation of cracks which are invaded by bacteria are often causes. In these cases, regular cleaning and hoof maintenance, coupled with clean pasture, will help prevent these painful occurrences.

Some horses, however, seem prone to abscesses, and even the best of care doesn't seem to prevent them all. In some cases corrective shoeing with pads to reduce impact and bruising can help.
